Love and Valentine’s day: I Dig You

Valentines Day is almost here and aren’t these the cutest things since sliced bread?  I am thinking that these would make sweet presents for my kids’ teachers.  Although, I think they would make a great anytime present for kids. Continue reading →

It may have not been the best Halloween ever in our neck of the woods, but at least I have some Pineresting stuff to share this Tuesday.

Halloween: The perfect excuse to eat some carbs

Source: foodieinmotion.com via Tara on Pinterest‘

I could never follow the diets that require you to take away carbs or even drastically reduce your intake of carbs, because last time I checked Dr. Pepper has plenty of carbs in it. Of course, now that I am trying to save money, I have left Dr. Pepper on the side of the road crying and replaced him with Dr. Perky. Dr. Pepper was good, but Dr. Perky delivers the same carb-filled and caffeine-filled satisfaction at a much lower price.

Drinking carbs is not my only vice.  I also love gummy bears and other sweets.  Thus, this Halloween I plan on eating carbs…actually I am popping some mild duds in my mouth as I write this (because I have  a lot of Milk duds left and someone has to eat them). Continue reading →

Emo Zombies (at least the ones carved in pumpkins) are Not Winners

I thought I would share an update on the pumpkin carving contest.
Our Emo Zombie did not win. Actually, it did not even place.
I am thinking there are not a lot of Emo lovers in our neighborhood. I don’t think we have a lot of Zombies either. Go figure.
What we do have are some great pumpkin carvers in our neighborhood.
We had no chance.

Thanks to Colleen, one of my awesome neighbors, for letting me post her photo of all the pumpkins in the carving contest.  Check out the pumpkins to the right (we were obviously on the wrong side of the table).

Our pumpkin will live on (at least for a few more days) and it has a Halloween wish for you…

Halloween fun starts with pumpkins!

Today we have been busy getting ready for our neighborhood Fall Festival. The festival contains a haunted forest, pumpkin and costume contests, games, and inflatables.  The Jack O’ Lantern contest was what we had our sights on this year.  My husband usually puts in a lot of effort carving our pumpkins.  He researches what he wants to do on the internet and then plays with it in Photoshop.  It is a process.

This year the kids wanted our family pumpkin to have a zombie on it.  My husband worked on that first. He was not happy with the results.  I think it would have been cooler if the hair was not cut out and scraped out instead.

Zombie or Emo? You decide.

My son drew what he wanted, so his design was all his.  I think it looks pretty good!  It is our traditional pumpkin.

Pretty scary, huh?

My daughter wanted to pay hommage to her costume and wanted the skull logo from Monster High.  This pumpkin was mine to carve, since my husband had to help set up the Haunted Forest.  I am not as detail oriented as my husband.  I also struggle with transferring the picture on a flat piece of paper onto a round pumpkin.   Thus, the nose is a bit off kilter, but overall I am proud of my results.

Freaky, just got fabulous!

As we carved pumpkins, I played a marathon of the show “Halloween Wars” for inspiration.  It is amazing to me what professional carvers can do with pumpkins!  So, I thought I would share some amazing Jack O’ lanterns that I have found on the internet.  These pumpkins put ours to shame!

Amazing carving!!

Great idea!  I could never think of this on my own, but I think even amateurs like us could do it… someday.

What you talking about, Willis?  Oh, this one is good on so many levels!  Source

Love Angry Birds?  This is the pumpkin for you!

Last, but certainly not least is this one.  I love it’s integration with the small pumpkin.  It also has pumpkin seed tears.  Wonderful!

So, It looks like we have a long way to go before our pumpkins win any big contests judging by the pictures of pumpkins out on the internet.  I hope none of these carvers live in my neighborhood.

I love Fall…Let me count the ways.

I love Fall!  I have lots of reasons why I think it is the best season of the year…

  1. My Birthday:  This was way more exciting when I was younger, but still I love celebrating my birthday each November.
  2. Halloween:  I love this holiday.  When I was younger I loved to dress up and go door to door and get all the candy my pillow case could hold.  Now, I love it because I love to see my kids dress up and enjoy the free candy they have essentially begged for.  My kids love this holiday.  They start trying to decide what they will be… the day after Halloween and proceed to contemplate and plan their costumes throughout the whole year.  Some costumes have been hits, and others have been misses.  Last year, I ordered my daughter’s costume online and it was a bit too small.  The result was a slightly provocative Alice in Wonderland.  This year I thought we would pick something a little less revealing.  It did not happen.  My daughter’s favorite toys are American Girl dolls and Monster High dolls, and so those were the two costumes that were in the running… Monster High won.  I will have a little Draculaura this year.  I did buy the costume 0ne size too big this year, in hopes to make it cover up a little more of her behind (so we should not have a repeat of last year).
  3. Jack O’ Lanterns:  We love to carve pumpkins in our house.  The kids and I love the whole process of going to the pumpkin patch, picking out our pumpkins, running through the hay maze, carving the pumpkins, and then making pumpkin seeds.  My husband likes all the stuff that does not involve crowds.  Yesterday, we headed to one of the bigger pumpkin patches in the area with a close friend and her two kids.  Usually, we do this a week before Halloween because we procrastinate until the kids remind us we did not go.  This year we thought we would beat the crowd by going at the beginning of October.   We realized very soon that there really isn’t a good time to beat the crowd at this pumpkin patch.  Personally, I think if an hour wait in line gets you this smile…  and this smile…  …then it is worth it!
  4. Haunting the House and other neighborhood fun:  Our kids love decorating the house, whether it is for Halloween or Christmas.  They get mad, and I might say even “pissed,” if we do not do our part in joining in on the holiday fun.  This year my husband came up with a great way to decorate the house.  He has been gathering materials all week and so hopefully in another week or two… his masterpiece will be revealed.  Our neighborhood also has a Halloween festival.  There is usually dancing and contests, some crafts and a potluck.  It is one of the best events we do in our neighborhood.  It was last year at the festival that we discovered my son’s dancing talent.
This song soon became his favorite song to dance to.  Recently, he has learned to break dance so I am guessing he will rock the dance floor again this year.
  5. To Scare or be Scared:  I love being scared.  Thankfully it is really easy for me to get scared so it is not hard to do.  When I was in college I loved to go to the haunted houses and haunted forests, but since having kids, we have not been.  Luckily, our neighborhood creates our own haunted forest.  Last year was the first year the kids went though the forest and they were scared.  Since I am a wonderful mother who likes to document rites of passages, I videotaped the fun last year…
My daughter was so embarrassed!  I don’t know why though… I think it would be the perfect audition tape if ever she wanted to be in a horror movie.  She has a great scream.

So there you have it some of the reasons I love Fall… There are more, but maybe I will share them with you guys later.

How Soulless enabled me to say I read Steampunk (or at least this series)…

Gail Carriger, Halloween, Late Enough, looking good, Soulless, Steampunk

My friend Alex asked “What Should I Read Next?” on her blog http://www.lateenough.com (by the way I would love to embed these websites, but I am not that technically savvy… sorry!).  Anyway, I am going to recommend Soulless by Gail Carriger.

I am actually reading the 3rd book in the series right now… “Blameless.”  Alex is in a real pickle this time.  She is shamed by the headlines and forced to leave London and flee to the religious order (the Templars) to get the answers she needs and to protect her from the vampire hives set on killing her.  Alas, though I cannot say much more because I am not sure if you have read the first two novels yet, and I would surely hate to ruin those for you.

So let me start with Soulless….

Even though I was intrigued with this book, I have to admit I was a bit scared off from trying it due to its “steampunk” references.  Wikipedia says steampunk is a sub-genre of Science Fiction, Fantasy, Alternative History, and Speculative fiction.  It also says “Steampunk involves a setting where steam power is still widely used—usually the Victorian era Britain—that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy.”

Personally, I have not had much luck with Science Fiction books (I think of the time I tried to read “The Enders Game”).  When it comes to pop culture, let’s just say my husband cringes when I say I don’t remember much about the Star Wars movies (that I saw when I was 10 or so).  If I got a Star Trek question on Trivial Pursuit I would bet money I would not be able to answer it correctly.  All of this are reasons why I know I am not as cool as my husband.  Luckily, I do tend to like the other genres though and I can name a few Science Fiction books I have really liked.

I have to admit, that it was a “Castle” episode that made me pick up Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate, #1) and give it a try.  It was something about the steampunk party that he attended that made me think that the book may be fun to read.  Really, I think going to a steampunk party would be so fun ({sigh} sometimes I wish I lived in a bigger city).  Enough getting sidetracked, Let’s get back to Soulless.   It also boasted Vampires and Werewolves (which I love).  I have admit that the vampires don’t sparkle, so hopefully that fact will not disappoint you. It does have a character, Lord Akeldama, who is like a vampire Elton John (who is pretty sparkly in his own way).  Personally, I will take Lord Akeldama any day over his sparkly cousins.

Now the theory behind the supernatural species in these books is simple… they have more soul.  Thus, really creative, smart, and eccentric people tend to have a better chance of becoming supernatural.  Alex is the opposite… she has no soul and she is like the antidote.  When she touches anything supernatural they return to being ordinary.  Having no soul also makes her extremely practical, or at least that is what it seems like in the first book.  I seem to think that she seems practical because she lives with her mother and two silly sisters… which makes her strive to be anything other than being like them.  Alex does not try to fit in to the norms society places on women at that time.  She does not care if people talk about her because she speaks up matters of concern, rather than worrying about never finding someone to marry her (which her family believes is the worse thing that could happen to her).

I also love that the other characters are very interesting.  I mentioned Lord Akeldama already, but  you will also meet Genevieve Lefoux, a hat maker and inventor who likes to wear men’s clothes so she also bucks the society’s norms (she has an even bigger roles in Changeless and Blameless).   Of course, there are the werewolves as well, Lord Maccon and Professor Lyall. Lord Maccon is the Alpha werewolf of the Woolsey pack and can seriously use a lesson on Victorian Etiquette, but that is why I personally loved his character.  He is balanced by Professor Lyall, who is well dressed, well mannered, and really intelligent.

So there you have it… Why Alex should read this book and why I think I may dress in a little steampunk number this Halloween (or sooner if I happen to here of a Steampunk Party in the area).  I have already gotten a few catalogues full of Halloween costumes for the kids in the mail so I guess modern commerce and marketing would like me to start planning!
